    Amnesty extended for firearms

    May 30, 2016

Defence Ministry has extended the general amnesty period to surrender illegal firearms. Army Media spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera told the Daily News yesterday that the Defence Ministry had received several telephone calls asking to extend this period.

The ministry extended the period from May 30 to June 17. Persons still in possession of firearms are requested to hand over them to the nearest Police Station, Divisional Secretariat or AGA office during the period.

“Roughly more than 423 firearms had been handed over to the authorities during the amnesty period given from April 25 to May 6,” he added. (CDN)
