New Operations Theatre for Heart Surgery Unit at Karapitiya Hospital

    March 19, 2016

It was reported last Sunday (March 13) that heart surgeries at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital have been suspended. Cardiac Specialist Dr. Namal Gamage said that this step was taken as a germ had entered the theatre.

Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said that as a solution to the issue, financial allocations have been made to build an operations theatre for the Heart Surgery Unit.

The Health Services Director General said that there are two Cardiac and thoracic doctors at the Karapitiya Hospital. In addition there is also another thoracic doctor. The only issue is that all three of them have to work in one operations theatre. As such they have taken a policy decision to build another Theatre Complex. The Government has allocated the required funds for this purpose. Without strengthening the Disease Prevention unit they cannot overcome the problem whatever opportunities for the conduct of surgeries were expanded.

Heart Patients suffered enormous hardships due to the suspension of heart surgeries at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. Arrangements have been made to conduct surgeries of patients who had been endangered by the germ from among patients who are undergoing thoracic, at the Welisara Chest Hospital. Six doctors have been allocated for these surgeries. In the meantime it has been decided to conduct more heart surgeries at the Colombo National, Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Polonnaruwa hospitals.
