    CEA to control noise pollution Featured

    The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) in a bid to control noise pollution in the metropolitan city has commenced raids in Colombo on vehicles that have installed horns that do not comply with the accepted standards.

    CEA Director General K.H.Muthukudaarachchi said about 200 heavy vehicles with loud horn noises were identified during these raids carried out so far.



    He said the CEA decided to implement this programme as an early warning measure, before moving to take stern action against the offenders.



    As of the regulations of the National Environment Act, the maximum level for a vehicle horn noise within two metre open air space is 105 decibels while this level is 93 decibels within seven metres.



    He said the air horns fixed to heavy vehicles such buses, tippers and lorries exceed the permitted levels.
