Expressing views in this regard Prisons Media Spokesman Thushara Upuldeniya said that the President has granted an amnesty for the prisoners marking the 2016 Independence Day. The amnesty has been given to prisoners who have been imprisoned for minor offences.

Accordingly he said that 690 prisoners are being released from prisons throughout the country. He revealed that they included 76 inmates from then Welikada Prisons, 80 from the Mahara Prisons and 31 prisoners from the Bogambara Prisons.
