"During Thai Pongal - also known as the 'Festival of the Tamils' - celebrants traditionally give thanks for a bountiful harvest. The festival has its own significance and characteristic rituals and worship associated with home, family and agriculture, Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Minister D.M. Swaminathan said in a Thai Pongal message
The message: "For Tamils in Sri Lanka and around the world, Thai Pongal is a time of joy, thanksgiving, reconciliation, and community celebration.
"As Sri Lanka is advancing towards prosperity and betterment of the lives of its people, I call upon the Tamils and all others to rekindle their resolve to bring about further social interrelation and unity of all communities co-existing in the new peaceful environment in the country.
"As the Hindu Affairs Minister, I offer my warmest wishes to all those celebrating Thai Pongal.
The birth of the month "Thai" will pave the way for new opportunities."
