Sri Lanka to increase women's political representation in local authorities

    November 20, 2015

The approval of the Cabinet of Ministers has been given to amend the Local Authorities (Special Provisions) Act No 21 of 2012 in view of increasing the women’s representation in local authorities.

The proposal was submitted by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to fulfil the pledge given at the recent Presidential and General Elections to allocate 25% of representation to women in Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions.

This proposal points out that, although about 50% - 51% of Sri Lankan population is women, only about 5 percent of women are elected to the parliament, provincial councils and local government institutions.
