    Sri Lanka becomes member of the apex UN body on Space/UN COPUOS Featured

    Sri Lanka was admitted to the apex UN body on space; United Nations Committee of Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, popularly known as UN COPUOS, the Arthur C.Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies announced.

    Following the proceedings at the 58th session of the UN COPUOS, which was held in Vienna in June this year the matter was forwarded to the United Nations general assembly, where the resolution pertaining to Sri Lanka’s admission to the UN COPUOS, along with five other states was adopted by the 4th committee of the UN general assembly on October 29, 2015.

     

    Sri Lanka admitted full member status of UN COPUOS within a short span of a few months since becoming an observer in February this year. The matter was initiated by the ACCIMT as the national focal agency for Space Technology Applications for the country with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs duly contributed on the formalities.

     

    The country’s admission to this apex body would mean its active involvement of the policy, regulatory, legal as well as technology development matters pertaining space at the highest level, thereby protecting the interest of the nation in the international arena of space activities and contributing to the development of national capability in space technology applications.
