Finnish exports to Sri Lanka have increased 140 percent in 2014, with the highest increase of Finnish trade globally, Delhi-based roving Ambassador of Finland to Sri Lanka Rauli Suikkanen said.

"Finland is very strong in many fields, but especially in ICT, clean technologies, education, water supply and sanitation, energy, mining etc. Some Finnish companies are already operating in Sri Lanka and many others are interested in Sri Lanka," the Envoy said.

The Nordic powerhouse is the world's ICT innovation leader and is also the lead producer and user of information and communication technology in the world.

The Ambassador also stated that tourism from Finland to Sri Lanka is increasing as well, and from the point of view of Finland, Sri Lanka is a very potential business partner.

"It is very encouraging to note that some active businessmen in both Sri Lanka and Finland have established Finland-Sri Lanka Business Council which is already officially registered in Finland," he added.

He recalled that the first ever business delegation headed by Finnish Deputy Minister visited Sri Lanka in December last year.

According to the Department of Commerce, Sri Lanka's trade with Finland has been fluctuating for the last few years and reported US$ 28 million in 2013, with exports comprising US$ 16.05 million. Tea is the main item exported to Finland (55% in 2013), followed by apparel. Sri Lanka's leading import from Finland is mobile cellular phones.
