The "Punarudaya" national program for environmental conservation (2016 - 2018), which has been created with the contribution of all the relevant parties, is expected to provide solutions for the major environmental issues within a period of three years.
With the implementation of the program the government expects to resolve major environmental issues of controlling the environmental pollution, Forest Conservation and Development, Sustainable Land Management, Conflict between wild animals and humans, and promotion and restructuring of institutions related to environmental conservation.
The project will cost an estimated Rs. 22.547 billion over the next three years.
President Maithripala Sirisena in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment has proposed to implement the program with effect from October 2015 and the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the President's proposal.
