    October 08, 2015

The government will take all possible measures to uplift the tea smallholders as well as the tea industry, Plantation Industries Minister Naveen Dissanayake said speaking in Parliament at the adjournment debate on the guaranteed price for paddy, tea and rubber.

The Minister said the government had spent Rs 6 billion from March up to now to purchase tea at a guaranteed price of Rs 80 per kilogram from tea small holders.

He said the world market prices of tea and rubber have declined, adding that this had affected Sri Lanka and its not the government's fault.

He added that new technology and new breeds should be introduced to tea, paddy and rubber cultivation to over come these issues.
