    Degree Programmes to cater to the job market - Minister Grero

    State Minister of University Education Mohan Lal Grero said that degree programmes would hereafter be designed to cater to the job market as Industry-University linkage is very useful.

    Addressing the Vice Chancellors and Directors at the University Grants Commission Auditorium, he said that it had been planned to allocate money next year for establishing E-Education Centres in each university and Wi-Fi facilities in all reading rooms.

    He said that it has also been planned and money is being allocated to establish a central National Digital Library which can be accessed by teachers and students.

    The Minister said that he expects the support of university dons to make the programme a success.

    Grero pointed out that the previous government had introduced the technology stream for general education system in 2013 as a method to increase the university intakde. Engineering technology, bio-systems technology and science technology to the GCE (AL) under the technology stream had been introduced, he said.

    He said the problem of resource allocation in the general education system in the country had been identified. Because of that we have started 1,000 schools projects and through that we have already started technology stream in 251 schools for which 40,000 had opted..

    He thanked the Sri Jayewardenepura University for taking measures to start a technology faculty.

    The Minister said that the ministry expected to increase the university intake by 10% annually to achieve the target within five years as only 27,000 are accommodated annually at present at state universities.

    Minister of University Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella, Ministry Secretary D. C. Dissanayake, UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan De Silva, Additional Secretary P.G. Jayasinghe, all vice chancellors, and directors participated in the meeting.
