Media Minister refers to role of media in reporting child abuse incidents

    October 02, 2015

Minister of Parliament Reforms and Mass Media Gayantha Karunatilake has referred to the major responsibility vested in the media in the reportage of child incidents and said that a self-censorship is necessary in this respect. If not the Minister said that certain measures would have to be adopted taking the children into consideration as a country.

The Minister said that media reportage on children should be carefully handled. As such reporting should be handled with self-censorship. If such initiatives are not taken into consideration, the Minister said he believes that the time has come to take certain measures giving due consideration to children.

He made a fervent appeal to all media organisations to exercise maximum restraint on reporting incidents pertaining to children despite availability of cheap opportunities to make financial and other gains in the field of journalism.
