The “Walk Rally” that covered a 2 km distance in central Havana, culminated in an impressive ceremony, showcasing the cultural, spiritual, artistic and innovative skills and talents of women representing Asian countries and Cuba. The dance performances staged by Sri Lankan students was the star attraction and enthralled the audience with their unique rhythmic acts. Several Cuban women Olympic gold medalists too came on stage and spoke of the woman’s role and contribution for the common good of mankind.
Delivering a speech, President of the ALA, Ramanika Dissanayake emphasized the significance of such celebrations for the emancipation of women around the world and thanked all those who volunteered to support this worthy endeavor. Besides members of the Diplomatic Corps, officials from the Cuban Institute of Sports &Recreation ( INDER ), Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), Cuban Women Federation ( CWF ) and well wishers also showed up in numbers.
The “ Official Ceremony cum Gala Dinner “co - hosted by the ALA and ICAP, on 09th March at the ICAP Head quarters was graced by the President of the ICAP, Kenio Serano, Vice Foreign Minister, Ana Terresita Gonzalez, Representative of the Communist Party of Cuba, Hilda Vasallo, officials from INDER, CWF, members of the Diplomatic Corps etc. The ceremony began with the lighting of the Sri Lankan traditional oil lamp followed by the release of pigeons and declaration of the stand of solidarity to symbolize the freedom and dignity of women. The President of ICAP in her welcome speech, paid glowing tributes to women for their pioneering role and contribution to the welfare and well being of women.
Speaking on the occasion, President of ALA, Ramanika Dissanayake said that she was proud of to be an Asian woman coming from a country that produced Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the first woman Prime Minister of the world. Moreover, she also noted that Asia is home to a host of iconic legendary women who have championed the cause of women in every strata of the society. The finale of the ceremony saw the gathering of invitees who stood up in unity holding a lit candle in their hands and ringing the UN theme song dedicated to women. The audience also took part in a workshop “World Café” in which they debated topics of current interest to women in a lively atmosphere. The invitees were treated to an array of Asian delicacies prepared by the members of the ALA in Cuba.
The International Women’s Day 2015 organized by the ALA for the first time in Havana was a grand success and well received by all those present at the two - day celebrations.
