A significant programme is in place to build a Sri Lanka sans slum dwellings within the nexvt two years through the Mahinda Chinthana Vision for the Future.

Under the low income housing programme, 70000 housing units would be built and constructions of 15000 are taking place in 18 project sites in the city at present.
The entire project with houses consists of a living area, two bed rooms, pantry, balcony and other amenities together with proper sanitary facilities have been erected at a cost of over Rs. 1200 million. Moreover, public convenience places, play grounds, spacious car parking facilities etc... too are available.
