Electrified railway link connecting Veyangoda and Aluthgama

    May 06, 2015

A feasibility study is underway for connecting Veyangoda and Aluthgama via an electrified railway link and this will be undertaken by the Ceylon Electricity Board and the University of Moratuwa with World Bank funds, Internal Transport Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said while addressing a media-briefing at the Internal Transport Ministry yesterday.

"This project is to provide safety, comfort and ease of travel without any hazzard."

He noted that based on the projected surge in tourist arrivals it is likely to create a bigger demand for these services.

Train engines, train compartments and rail tracks will be improved to increase the standards of the railway service, Bandara said.

"We have launched a programme to modernise the country's train service network. The focus of the Railways Department is the safety and security of passengers. I hope we will be able to provide a better and organised transport system to the public in the coming years," he added.
