    Police arrest over 600 drivers for alleged drunk driving

    Police have arrested 605 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol following special operations launched in view of the festive season.

    The arrested persons include 291 motorcyclists, 240 three-wheeler drivers, 24 car drivers, 20 lorry drivers and 8 van drivers.

     

    Police said that 4 private bus drivers. One Sri Lanka Transport Board driver has also been arrested on charges of driving under the influence of liquor.

     

    The Police succeeded in apprehending a total of 283 motorists within the 24 hours from 6.00 am from 13th April to 6.00 yesterday morning. It is reported that a majority of them were motorcycle riders.

     

    The Police department launched the special operation to arrest drunken drivers on April 11, in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and is expected to continue till the 20th.
