The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Management has taken steps to implement a Gin-Nilwala Diversion Project. This project will ensure water for existing cultivated lands during both Yala and Maha Season while providing water for 8500 ha of new land for agriculture in Hambantota District and increasing agricultural productivity and positive environmental benefits due to increased ground water level in Hambantota District. Also industries and commercial agriculture in Greater Hambantota area too will benefit with the provision of water through the project.
The following benefits will be a;sp accrued with the implementation of the above project which was designed after a lengthy consultative process and minimizing the number of people that will be affected in the area:
* provision of drinking water to Pitabeddara, Athuraliya, Weligama, Mulatiyana, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Dickwella and Kirinda-Puhulwela Divisional Secretaries’ Divisions in Matara District;
* provision of drinking water to Katuwana, Okkawela, Beliatta, Angunukolapelessa, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota Town and Ambalantota areas inHambantota District;
