    A National Sports Museum to be established

    Ministry of Sports has taken steps to establish a National Sports Museum in Vicinity of the Independence Square at the premises of the ancestral home of the Late Mr. F.R. Senanayaka, to educate the future generation about the core values of sports, to exhibit and preserve trophies, souvenirs and also sports related literature of leading sportsman / sportswomen of international fame in Sri Lanka etc..

     

    One of the main objectives of opening this sports museum is to provide information about the events in the Sri Lankan folk games to school children and university students. The Ministry also planned to produce and display documentaries on sportsmen and sportswomen who have excelled in Cricket, Athletics, Rugby and Football at international level which helped to bring honour and fame to the country.

     

    The National Sports Museum will be inaugurated soon after the opening of the new building of the Sports Ministry at Independence Square.

     

    The Gold, Bronze and Silver medals and memorabilia of the Sri Lankan Olympic and Asian Games medalists from Duncan White to Susanthika Jayasinghe will be on display at this Museum. Apart from that the historic 1996 World Cup and the mementos received by world renowned Sri Lankan cricketers will be showcased, the Ministry revealed.(ST/KH)
