The construction of the ward was carried out with financial aid worth Rs. 50 million provided by Mohomad Ali and Fathima Jafurji commemorating their daughter Fareeda Jifurji.

In Sri Lanka about 2,500 – 3,000 children are born annually with heart diseases. Of them, nearly 2,000 are subject to surgeries where about 900 surgeries are performed at Lady Ridgeway hospital.

Due to the prevailing heavy congestion, and the long waiting list for surgeries, Minister Senarathne recently decided to perform surgeries of this hospital even after 4.00 pm on weekdays and during weekends. According to the sources, this new ward will be used to implement the above program as a pilot project for one year.
