    WP to get Rs.4 bn for development work

    Development work on 23 suburban towns in the Western Province will commence this month with an allocation of Rs.4 reserved from the last budget.

    The Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka said that Kaduwela, Maharagama, Enderamulla, Homagama, Kottawa, Panadura, Gongitota, Mihirigama, Horana, Udupila junction, Indigahamula junction, Welipillawa junction are among the 23 areas to be developed under this project.


    The minister was speaking at a press conference at the Ministry auditorium recently said: “The Western Megapolis Authority will be setup in the near future. A competition is being conducted for the public to find a term for Megapolis in the Sinhala and Tamil languages. The competition also envisages creating a logo for the authority, three-dimension structure and portrait".


    According to the Minister Rs.100,000 cash price will be awarded to each selected winner who would find a suitable definition for Megapolis. Cash prices of Rs.250,000, Rs.200,000 and Rs.100,000 will be awarded to the winners of the logo designing contest, three dimension structure and portrait contests respectively. The particiepants are requested to submit their applications on or before 31st March.


    Minister Ranawaka said that construction of houses for 68,000 shanty dwellers in Colombo is in progress. He asserted that not a single illegal construction will be destroyed without alternate housing provided.


    Megapolis and Western Development Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna also participated.
