The Navy was able to restore the pipeline with the assistance of the staff of the Petrolium Corporation and the Sri Lanka Coastguard Department as a result of the timely notification made by a sailor attached to SLNS Kelani, who had first observed the oil spill. Approximately 10,000 litres of kerosene had flowed into the lagoon due to the leak and it was observed that a large number of living beings in the lagoon area had died as a result.
