It was revealed at a meeting held recently at the Anuradhapura Kachcheri presided by Government Agent D.P.G.Kumarasiri that a three day pirith chanting ceremony will be held from July 28 at the Abhayagiri Stupa premises.
The Central Cultural Fund has provided around Rs. 5,000 million to complete the project. The height of the Stupa stands at 247 feet while the length of the lower terrace is 1,100 feet.
Since the beginning of the Abhayagiriya conservation project in 1997, over two million devotees have assisted in the conservation activities.
Abhayagiri Stupa stands majestically at a 235 hectare land at the northern part of ancient Anuradhapura. Abhayagiri Stupa was established by King Valagamba so called as Vattagamini Abhaya during the period of his second reign, from 89-77 BC. It is said that the Stupa is built over the footprint of the Buddha and it is one of the eight great places of veneration in Anuradhapura.
