Met. Department warns strong winds today

Since there may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers today (6th Dec.), the Department of Meteorology requested general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.


According to the latest forecast issued by the department at 05.30 in this morning, the department says the low-pressure area in the central Bay of Bengal is located 800km away from the Sri Lanka. It is likely to further intensify in to a depression during next 12 hours and move north-westward away from Sri Lanka. Therefore, wind speed can be increased in Northern and Eastern sea areas.


The forecast further added that several spells of showers will occur at Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces and showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Hambanthota district after 2.00p.m.

 

Fairly strong gusty winds (up to 50kmph) can be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwaand Centralprovinces and in Galle,Mathara, Amparaand Batticaloa districts.
