Kandy to be made a megacity

August 11, 2017

The government is planning to make Kandy a Megacity by linking Kadugannawa, Wattegama and Thumpane with Japanese aid, said Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka.

He made these comments attending a ceremony to vest the Dangolla underground water plant, Herassagala underground water plant and pumping station with the people. All this construction was done at a cost of Rs 300 million.

Minister Ranawaka said that there were many obstacles in linking Kadugannawa, Wattegama and Thumpane   to Kandy which includes providing water to housing schemes in Kandy, removing the rain water as well as the drainage system.

The traffic congestion in the city is also a problem faced by Kandy and it is an issue faced by the whole country. The government is trying to tackle this problem by shifting the administration to another venue and the commercial city to another venue such as Matale as well as developing the Peradeniya University area separately.

In addition, we are also planning to strengthen the transport system and it will start next year. A transport hub linking Kandy Good shed, Hospital, William Gopallawa Mawatha, upper Peradeniya Road, station, Bus stand, Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Super market will be constructed and we hope that the traffic congestion will ease with these steps.

The government is also planning to build a housing scheme for professionals in the city and there will be many more cities with housing schemes for professionals, he added.
