Health Minister to prevent eye-lens racket

Minister of Health, Nutrition, and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senarathe said that he would take necessary steps to prevent the eye lens racket and to provide eye lenses for lower prices.

He made these remarks recently participating in an observation visit at the Sri Lanka Eye Bank in Colombo. At the visit, the minister paid his attention regarding the development of the eye bank.

 

According to the Minister, the eye lenses imported from India for Rs. 6, 000 are sold at Rs. 25, 000 in the local market. It was also revealed that some doctors who recommend the eye lenses imported by particular companies to their patients are given money by those companies.

 


Recently, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society D.C. Ranasinghe and a group of officials met the Health Minister. There, the minister instructed the Health Secretary Anura Jayawickreme to increase the amount of money given to the Society by the Health Department from 0.2 million to Rs. 1 million.
