    The Water Board says that the water supply to all areas within the limits of the Colombo Municipal Council will be at low pressure for 12 hours on Saturday (23).

    The National Water Supply and Drainage Board said that the water supply to the aforementioned area will be released at low pressure from 12 noon to 12 midnight due to essential maintenance work to be carried out on Saturday.

    President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday took serious exception to a top Buddhist monk urging former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to take over the country as a Hitler-type military dictator. President Sirisena said as a Buddhist he had the highest respect for the clergy, but could not agree with a senior monk of the Asgiriya chapter who invited Rajapaksa to “be a Hitler, take the military and take power.”

    Unveiling a painting in honour of the late Lakshman Kadirgamar at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva today (21 June), Hon. Liam Fox, the Secretary of State for International Trade of the United Kingdom, said that he hoped the painting would prompt the future generations and the staff of WIPO to learn from the legacy of the late Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, “who served and will continue to serve as an example to us all”. He made these remarks addressing a gathering of invitees including senior officials of international organizations and diplomats, in commemorating the life of the late Kadirgamar.

    Commissioner General of the Department for Registration of Persons, P.V. Gunathilake has requested students sitting for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations this year to send in the applications for the National Identity Card (NIC) at the earliest possible.

    Sending the applications in due time will make the NIC issuing procedure convenient and uncomplicated for the department, stated the Commissioner General. He added that nearly 40% of the candidates, who will be sitting for the examination this year, have not yet applied for their NICs.

    It was reported that a considerable number of applications that have already been submitted are filled out incorrectly. The Commissioner asks all the Head Monks of Piriven, principals, candidates and their parents to heed to direct the applications to the department without delay.
