The High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Sri Lanka, Maj Gen (R) Qasim Qureshi said that the brotherly and time tested relationship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is one of choice not compulsion, as it is based on trust and mutual respect, and its strength lies in multifaceted engagement in many fields such as trade, defense, science, culture and education.
The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Geneva submitting its report before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) says it is regrettable that an elected member of the Northern Provincial Council Ms. Ananthi Sasitharan had chosen to misrepresent the arrest and detention of Ms. Balendran Jeyakumari. The fact that her daughter was taken under Police care when she was arrested has been portrayed as a case of arresting a child who participated in a protest. “It is also regrettable that Ms. Sasitharan despite being a member of a Provincial administration had chosen to make statements in the UN Human Rights Council using time allocated to two NGOs,” Sri Lanka’s Permanent Mission stated in a Right of Reply statement.
The Second Phase of the Southern Expressway from Pinnaduwa in Galle to Godagama in Matara was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa followed by religious observances at the Pinnaduwa interchange.
The ceremonial enshrining of the Sacred Relics in Mahaweli Maha Seya will take place on Monday, March 17. President Mahinda Rajapaksa worshiped the Sacred Relics which are to be ceremonially enshrined in the newly built Mahaweli Maha Seya in Kadadora, Kothmale and handed over the Sacred Relics to Minister Naveen Dissanayake at Temple Trees. The construction of the Stupa which commenced in 1983 under a concept of former Mahaweli Minister late Gamini Dissanayake came to a complete halt in 1994 with his demise. But later when the Minister of Public Management Reforms Naveen Dissanayake became the President of the Mahaweli Cultural Foundation Trust, he continued with the construction work with the blessings of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. and now 90 percent of the work has been completed. It would be opened in September.
Addressing a meeting held with the Muslim community in Galle after declaring open the renovated Jumma Mosque at Kapuwatta ,Weligama , the President said that certain groups are trying to destroy Sri Lanka's friendship with Muslim countries by spreading false propaganda for obtaining short term benefits.
Sri Lanka intervening during the 25th Session of the Human Rights Council under Agenda Item 3: Clustered ID with the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the Special Rapporteur on Counter - Terrorism on 12th March 2014, said the recent sporadic attacks on religious targets are isolated incidents and there is an attempt to portray such sporadic incidents targeting places of worship as a sign of religious hatred and intolerance.
