102 brand new houses constructed in the Nuwara Eliya district under the programme of constructing 50,000 housing units for the martyred and service heroes of the tri forces and the Civil Defence force were handed over to war heroes and to the families of martyred war heroes by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a special ceremony held at the Central College ground's in Poramadulla yesterday.
The President ceremonially handed over keys of the first house to Sergeant H.M.U.K Herath, a resident of 07, Bangalawatta, Jonstan Watta, Poramadulla in Rikillagaskada. The President also handed over stationary packs for children at this occasion.
The Ministry of Defence and Urban Development launched the 'Api Wenuwen Api' housing project with the aim of elevating the living standard of War Heroes and their families by supporting them to construct their own houses. This project is being carried out under the guidance and close supervision of Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Chairperson of the Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa.
So far houses have been built covering Kandy, Kurunegala, Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Badulla, Galle, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kalutara, Kegalle, Polonnaruwa Gampaha ,Rathnapura and Mathale districts.
Under these projects basic infrastructure facilities like roads, electricity, telecommunication, educational, health and water and sanitary facilities are also improved in the respective villages.
Individuals who wish to extend their support and grateful appreciation to the services and sacrifices of war heroes could do so by contributing generously towards this project. Contributions could be sent to the following Bank Accounts.

Household equipment and furniture for the houses are also provided under the scheme.
The project is phased over five years, with 10,000 houses to be completed each year. Under the first phase of the project 1,509 housing units were constructed at Ipalogama in the Anuradhapura district and were handed over to the war heroes and to the families of the martyred war heroes. The Housing Project is the realization of a pledge made by President Mahinda Rajapakse to the members of the Armed Forces during the last Presidential election campaign.
The total cost for one house of the project is Rs. 3.5 million and it is significant that all these houses are constructed by soldiers. (niz)
