President places first signature on Blood Donor Day Flag

    June 04, 2014

World Blood Donor Day Global Event on 14th June will be hosted by Sri Lanka this year. The world Health Organization has taken this decision as Sri Lanka's national blood transfusion service has marked a significant progress in blood donation.  Prior to the global event, the Health Ministry has organized various activities to enlighten the public on the importance of blood donation.

Among them is to obtain around 50,000 signatures from the public on the official flag eyeing guinnese record. This was inaugurated yesterday at the temple trees with President Mahinda Rajapaksa placing the first signature on the flag  at Temple Trees yesterday.

Sri Lanka will play host to the Global Celebration of World Blood Donor Day on 14th July.  Sri Lanka has been fortunate to become the first ever South Asian country to host the WBDD global event in 2014 and Sri Lanka will be the second country in the South-East Asian region to host the global event. This precious opportunity was gained by National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) of Sri Lanka due to its unique achievements during recent past.

Accordingly, the Health Ministry and the National Bood Transfusion Service together with the World Health Organization has organized World Blood Donor Day celebrations  in Colombo from 9th to 14th June 2014.  A motorcade will parade the streets commencing from Hambantota, Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa for a period of four days from June 4 and at the end reach Colombo.
