National fisheries policy with Norway support

    January 15, 2017

A national Fisheries policy to protect, manage and develop the fisheries sector has commenced with the financial and technical support of Norway.

Since Norway has one of the best fisheries policies in the world Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera requested the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg to support us in the preparing of a National Fisheries Policy when She was in Sri Lanka last year.

Accordingly, Norway sent a delegation of experts who are highly knowledgeable and experienced in the fisheries and aquatic resources to Sri Lanka. Now the team together with Sri Lankan counterparts are engaged in preparing the National fisheries policy.

Minister Amaraweera has advised the experts that the policy should be completed and launched this year taking into consideration the opinions, information and suggestions of all stakeholders in the sector. Most importantly the policy should not change when governments change.
