51 days have passed, and 49 remain to fulfill the election promises of the 100-day reform introduced by the newly elected regime in Sri Lanka. People are questioning the delay in implementing certain key promises, and the public is concerned that this may be another unfulfilled election promise. According to a top constitutional lawyer, Dr. Wickramaratne, the proposed simultaneous implementation of both constitutional and electoral reforms lacks practicality. Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha, a leading supporter of the President’s coalition, has also expressed his dissatisfaction at the delay in the implementation process. Vijaya Kumaranatunga was brutally assassinated on the 16th Feb 1988. This year marks the 27th death anniversary of Vijaya who was the founder of Sri Lanaka Mahajana Party (SLMP) which used to be the third largest party at a point in Sri Lanka’s political history. Vijaya and the founding members of Sri Lanka Mahajana Party Ven. Podaramulle Thero, T.B Illangarathna, Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunga with many other created this party as an alternative to UNP and SLFP. Unfortunately, the SLMP almost died down as it lost many members, totally about 117 who were assassinated during the 88 insurrection. Vijaya was the first to be killed from SLMP. I pen down an appreciation in honour of the close friendship my father Ossie Abeyagoonasekera shared with him. Vijaya was commemorated by my father until his death in 1994.
